Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic drainage is very different from therapeutic or aromatherapy massage which can cause friction to the skin and increase the blood supply. This, in turn, causes more lymph to be produced.

What is lymphatic drainage?

Manual lymphatic drainage is a type of massage based on the hypothesis that it will encourage the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissues back toward the heart.

Why lymphatics?

The lymphatic system is probably one of the most neglected systems covered when training in any form of bodywork, which is quite extraordinary as it is actually one of the most important when looking at overall health and optimum functioning on all levels.

It is not uncommon to think that a struggling lymphatic system will only present itself in the form of swelling or swollen extremities as in the case of Lymphoedema. The truth is, there are quite a few tell-tale signs that things are not as they’re supposed to be within the lymphatic system. Symptoms such as constant fatigue, headaches, increased cold and flu, are often signs of a system struggling to cope.

It is also probably the single biggest player in our immune system, and our first line of defence against disease. For example, the spleen, one of the lymphatic organs, is responsible for keeping our blood “clean” in order to fight off infection. Therefore, making sure that our lymphatics are functioning at an optimum level should be a priority when treating the body as a whole.
